| Still Fighting for Affirmative Action
The story notes that there has been no legal arguments made, so it is impossible to tell what will be made in court. It may well be that the school's able attorneys return with a simple, “Nothing we can do here." The Suit by the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action – the complaint can be found here: http://www.bamn.com/doc/2006/061108-complaint-prop2.pdf – alleges that there is no way to reconcile the Michigan Constitution with the US Constitution (and statutes passed pursuant to it). Whether they are correct or not, will be for the courts to decide. However, the drafters of the Michigan amendment were careful to put in provisions which stated that it cleaved to the 14th amendment. So, the flexibility of the Michigan amendment may be its strong point, but result in University's interpreting it to actually require no changes.
Amidst the rubble, Union's women push for national title
JACKSON, Tenn. -- On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Union University women's basketball team -- the No. 1-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team in the nation, with a spotless record of 22-0 -- was scheduled to have a day off from practice. The Lady Bulldogs had played at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., the night before and didn't arrive back at campus until 2:30 a.m. The day turned out to be far from restful, though. .
Pat McKee: High School Q&A
Question: I would like to know what was the most high school basketball ever to participate in on year? is there a book or website I could go to find out. Also I would like to find all the nicknames of the schools? (Bill from Westfield) Answer: There is a book called "Hoosier Hysteria" by Herb Schwomeyer that includes all kinds of fact about Indiana high school basketball. Its last publication was in 1997. Another book with lots of information is called "Tourney Time" by Bill May. It has info on Indiana high school basketball from 1911-2003. As for a place listing nicknames going back, a booklet called "Where in the World is Wes-Del, Westview and Wapahani" by Harley Sheets provides all kinds of school info, including nicknames, consolidations, etc. All three are available through the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, which of course has numerous other books about Indiana high school basketball, too.
Breathtaking Abuse of the Constitution
The initial grand jury subpoena named New Times Media LLC.; that's us, Michael Lacey (right) and Jim Larkin. We founded Phoenix New Times in 1970 in reaction to the war in Vietnam; our newspaper company has since expanded across America. The two of us live here, our kids go to school here, and we begin every day confronting the issues of journalism here. In nearly 40 years of work, this is our first joint byline. (You see, grand juries have their positive side.) .
Izzy takes pals on excellent RV adventure
JUPITER, Fla. — Boredom is the fuel of so many road trips. Jason Isringhausen and a few other Cardinals pitchers let the tedium of the early daze of February take them places a few weeks ago. Here they sat around the spring training clubhouse, realizing that there weren't many teammates around, there wasn't anything to do on a Saturday night and, dadgum, none of them planned to work out on Sunday anyway. So, Isringhausen organized the obvious. They were going to go RV'ing. "There weren't that many people here, there wasn't that much to do," Isringhausen said. "Seemed like a thing to do." And where else do you take an RV than … the infield at Daytona. Isringhausen scored passes for the 30th annual Budweiser Shootout at the Daytona International Speedway.
