| Cubs' DeRosa to Have Heart Procedure
MESA, Ariz. - Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa will undergo a heart procedure in Chicago on Thursday to correct an irregular heartbeat. Team doctor Stephen Adams said DeRosa is expected to return to Arizona on Sunday, be back on the field as early as Monday and ready to play in spring training games by March 8. "Theoretically, this should take care of the problem," Adams said Wednesday. .
Leafs opt to revisit the past, plus Crosby's absence
As fired Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr. finishes his last meal -- our personal favorite in Toronto is the sea bass at Il Posto Nuovo -- it is time to turn our eyes to his interim replacement, Cliff Fletcher, who formally was named Tuesday to clean up the elephant turds around the great Maple Leaf circus. A wise choice? Well, there is a maxim, perhaps introduced by the great American writer A.J. Liebling, that when it is late at night and you've have a few too many drinks, you should suppress any instinct to phone up an old girlfriend or boyfriend. The point is, you shouldn't want to relive your past, a notion that translates to the sports world. Sure, you can go home again if you want to -- Joe Gibbs in Washington and Marv Levy in Buffalo didn't exactly get to the Super Bowl in their sequels -- but maybe just for a visit.
An empire from a tub of goo
All you Easterners'...wow that is an overly generic statement. Honestly I haven't heard too many people around here deriding Albertans over their resource. Stop being such a hate monger. Posted 26/01/08 at 2:12 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
Terrapin's troubles
While numerous suburban home builders are struggling, Chicago-based Terrapin Properties LLC is emerging as the first major condo developer here to see operations spin out of control in the current housing slowdown. A foreclosure suit filed against Terrapin over a project in Kenosha, Wis., indicates the company could be dissolved. Indymac Bank, the primary lender on the 162-unit condo development in Kenosha, last month sued Terrapin for more than $13 million in back debts. But the case isn't a garden-variety foreclosure in which a lender has no recourse beyond getting the keys to the property. .

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A devastating cyclone on the southwestern coast of Bangladesh has killed more than 260 people and displaced thousands of others. The storm, which made landfall Thursday evening, has left at least 500 fishing trawlers -- staffed by more than 3,000 fisherman -- missing, PTI reported Friday. Officials said Bangladeshi Army troops and Air Force helicopters were called in to assist with rescue operations. The officials said the Barguna district was one of the hardest-hit by the storm, with 118 people in the area killed. Reports are still pending from some areas affected by the cyclone, including the Khulna and Barisal districts and the island of Dubla Chor. Meanwhile, the country's weather office said the sun was shining Friday, but there was a chance of rain later in the day, as the storm continues to flounder north of the country's coast in a weakened form, PTI said.
Erratic Gunman's 'Mindless Violence'
Former graduate student Stephen Kazmierczak, 27, wounded 15 others before shooting himself after he failed to take his medication. Mr Obama described the Northern Illinois University attack as "heartbreaking" and offered his sympathies to the loved ones of the victims. Kazmierczak was armed with five handguns during Thursday's ambush attack inside a lecture hall. Two of the weapons, a pump-action Remington shotgun and a Glock 9mm handgun, were purchased legally less than a week ago, authorities said. Investigators recovered 48 shell casings and six shotgun shells following the attack, campus Police Chief Donald Grady said. .
